Research Focus
Effects of Roots on Soil Organic Matter Decomposition. My research focuses on how plants affect belowground processes, specifically soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition, through the physical and chemical effects of their roots. Soils contain the largest terrestrial pool of carbon so understanding the processes which determine the rate of carbon loss to the atmosphere through SOM decomposition is crucial to accurately predicting future changes in climate. I perform my research in both field and greenhouse settings so a crucial part of my research is determining how results from greenhouse experiments can be translated to real world conditions.
