Managing nitrogen in organic vegetable agroecosystems on the Central Coast.
My dissertation work focuses on the complex task of balancing the nitrogen needs of organic vegetable crops with minimal loss to the environment. I have used field and greenhouse studies to estimate cover crop N fixation, crop and cover crop N uptake and winter soil N dynamics to better understand the N balance in these agroecosystems. I also am examining how growers and their associated nonhuman actors (e.g., cover crops, climate) co-produce organic and environmental quality and how they are jointly tested on these qualities in a changing social climate. |
