Research Focus
My research focuses on community forestry in Mexico and its potential to reduce deforestation and improve rural livelihoods. I look specifically at how external influences, including non-government actors, changes in land tenure rules, and export driven agriculture, affect communities’ capacity to govern commonly-owned forest resources. With an interdisciplinary, comparative case study approach, I conducted fieldwork in eleven communities in the states of Michoacan and Oaxaca, Mexico. I use survey and interview methods to gather data on forestry programs and livelihoods and apply remote sensing techniques to determine forest cover change using satellite imagery.
