Forest recovery and management options in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico.
I am interested in tropical forest ecology, succession, forest restoration, conservation, and related fields. My research focuses on forest recovery after human (milpas or slash-and-burn agriculture) and natural (hurricanes) disturbances in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico. I am also looking at the effect of seed planting, in sites previously used as milpas, as a way to accelerate the establishment of some species typical of the mature forest. In addition, my work examines the role different stakeholders (i.e. local people, government, academics, NGO’s, business agencies) have on forest conservation, focusing on their particular “vision” about why and how conservation should be carried out in this area. |
