Sponsoring an Intern
Every quarter, dozens of students find meaningful and life- changing internships
that assist them in clarifying their academic goals and also provide them
with real world experiences. Experiential learning, especially a directed
field experience, is an essential component of both a graduate and an undergraduate
education. The internship program reflects this commitment and has been an
integral part of the Environmental Studies major since its inception. Internships
augment the teaching and research components by giving students the opportunity
to apply theoretical and technical classroom information to defined projects
in an agency or field setting.
The internship program is constantly looking for new placements to meet the
diverse needs of our students and to serve the environmental community:
- An internship for credit is a three-party relationship between
you, the student, and their professor. Students are supervised by a faculty
member
and
receive
support and guidance from the internship coordinator.
- We ask that you orient, integrate, and provide on-going supervision to
the student so that he or she can have a beneficial learning experience.
- We offer our students a broad range of placements, so we encourage any
agency dealing with environmental issues on any level to consider making
a placement available.
- Project-type internships with a definite beginning and ending are more
accessible to our students for academic internships.

How will you benefit?
Through the internship program, students have been placed in public and
private organizations locally, nationally and internationally, where they
have become
involved in research, education, and policy formation projects while
gaining first-hand experience. Students have contributed to many organizations
by
completing useful and well-researched projects, leading to mutually
beneficial experiences for agencies and students.
Below are a few examples of projects students have done for their internships:
- Creating management plans for California State Parks for the protection
of endangered species
- Developing curricula for environmental education programs
- Research for city planning departments on housing developments
- Putting together interpretive signs for a native plant garden at Moss
Landing Marine Lab
- Project encouraging students to conserve energy
One student said: "I learned a lot and was also able to apply what
I have learned in school to real environmental issues. It is an
experience that gave me confidence in my knowledge and ability to do what
I have been trained
in. This has been one of the most valuable experiences for
my major."
An agency said: "Having an intern work for us has been a
great experience. As a non-profit, it was great to be able
to employ an
Environmental Studies
student. The student helped our organization greatly by
completing a project that helped us achieve our goals."
