Award Opportunities

The environmental studies department at UCSC is proud to offer undergraduates the opportunity to earn awards and scholarships for their achievements. Each year several awards become available, from fall through spring quarter, and are open to all undergraduate students or environmental studies majors. Specific announcements regarding award opportunities will be made throughout the year via email announcements, postings in the department, and online at the ENVS Award website.

Awards typically offered throughout the academic year are:

The Alan Church Environmental Pre-Law Award: This award will support an outstanding student who is pursuing studies leading to a career in environmental law. Up to $800, will be applied to the student’s tuition and fees only, with the following optional exception: up to $300 (three hundred dollars) may be used to fund the student’s Capstone, Senior Seminar, Senior Thesis, or Senior Internship project expenses, if pre-approved by the student’s major advisor.

James Stuart Chanley Scholarship for Environmental Studies: In memory of James Chanley, an award of up to $1,000 will be given to a UCSC Environmental Studies major.  This scholarship will be awarded to a student with financial need whose record demonstrates initiative and commitment to the environment and most closely resembles that of James Chanley (see biography on application form).

The Concur Scholarship: This award of up to $500 is given to students who have demonstrated an interest or are pursuing studies in environmental dispute resolution.  It is for students majoring in Environmental Studies, and the award shall be based on academic merit as indicated by performance in classes and internships.

Richard Cooley/Friends Foundation International Award: This award of up to $1000 is given to honor Richard Cooley, who founded the Environmental Studies program at UCSC.  It is for registered UCSC undergraduate students involved in field projects that result in a tangible, positive action for the betterment of the natural environment or improvement in environmental quality.  Projects may be local (UCSC included) to international in scope, and examples of successful projects may be seen in the Environmental Studies Internship Office.  Criteria for selection will be based on the project statement, tangible action, scholastic record, demonstrated initiative and potential for successful completion. For financial aid students, the award is to be used to offset additional costs not covered in the standard financial aid budget.

Terence Freitas Award in Environmental Studies: In memory of Terence Freitas, an award of up to $500 will be given to a UCSC Environmental Studies major.  This award will be given to a student with financial need whose scholastic record demonstrates initiative and commitment to the natural environment or the improvement of environmental quality. Preference will be given to students with an interest in and commitment to the livelihood and culture of indigenous peoples in developing countries, or those whose studies are related to conservation, or rainforest preservation.

Surfrider/Skye Ksander Memorial Award: The Surfrider Award is given in memory of Skye Ksander, a local semi-professional surfer and a student at UCSC.  Skye was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in January of 1999, and passed away just seven months later. Skye asked his family and friends to continue to further the mission of the Surfrider Foundation, protecting the precious ocean for future generations. Each year an award of up to $500 is offered to a continuing undergraduate student based on: Scholastic ability; Financial need; Demonstrated interest through work and study, towards protecting and enhancing our coastal and ocean environment
