ENVS BIOL Major

Environmental Studies/Biology Combined Major

This course of study provides students with the basic tools of biological science and sufficient understanding of resource conservation, conservation biology, and concerns about environmental sustainability.  The Environmental Studies/Biology degree program prepares students for graduate school or a career in the areas of conservation biology, restoration ecology, and other allied interdisciplinary life science fields. Students wishing to enter into specific graduate programs or seeking specific career certifications such as wildlife biologist need to check the requirements of each program and may need to add elements to their curriculum.  See a faculty adviser for help.  Students must complete the following:
Note: ALL courses from both disciplines must be taken for a letter grade


Introductory Requirements

For Environmental Studies:

  • AMS 7/L
  • Math 3 or AMS 2 or 3, or a minimum score of 31 on the math placement exam or 3 on the College Board AP Calculus Exam
  • ENVS 25
  • Soc/Anthro/Ethics (see single major reqs.)

For  Biology:

  • Bioe 20A  Cell and Molecular Biology
  • Bioe 20B  Development and Physiology
  • Biol 20C  Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
  • Chem 1A and 1B-1M and 1C-1N
  • Phys 1 and 2, or 6a/L and 6b/m

or

  • 2 Computer Science courses from:  CMPS 12A, 12B, 5C or 5G, 80B and 80G

Advanced Requirements

  • BIOL 105 (Genetics)
  • ENVS 100 and 100L (before any upper division electives)
  • BIOE 109 (Evolution)
  • 3 ENVS upper division electives
  • 3 BIOE/BIOL upper division electives
  • Upper-Division Electives: one must be a lab-based course

Senior comprehensive

  1. Any of the senior exit options for single environmental studies students  OR

  2. Any of the senior exit options for biology students
