ENVS EART Major

Environmental Studies/Earth & Planetary Sciences Major

The combined major in Environmental Studies and Earth & Planetary Sciences is intended to provide students with the basic tools of Earth sciences and environmental studies needed to address environmental problems. Suggested plans of study include water policy/hydrology, restoration ecology, agroecology/soil physical processes and environmental policy/climate change, among others. Consult with faculty from both the Environmental Studies and Earth & Planetary Sciences Departments.


Introductory Requirements

For Environmental Studies:

  • AMS 7/L
  • ENVS 24
  • ENVS 25
  • Soc/Anthro/Ethics (see single major reqs.)

For Earth & Planetary Sciences:

  • MATH 11A-11B or 19A-19B
  • CHEM 1A and 1B/1M and 1C/1N
  • PHYS 6A/L-6B/M (or 5A/L and 5B/M)
  • EART 5/5L or 10/10L or 20/20L

Advanced Requirements

  • EART 110a/L, or 110b/L, or 110c/L
  • 3 EART upper division electives (list available at the Earth & Planetary Sciences Dept. Office)
  • ENVS 100/L (before any upper division electives)
  • 3 ENVS upper division electives

Senior comprehensive - choose from one of the following:

  • ENVS 190 or 196 or 183 +183B senior internship
  • EART 188A and 188B
  • ENVS 195A or EART 195 and a senior thesis with faculty sponsors from both departments
