ENVS ECON Major

Environmental Studies/Economics Major

The combined major in Environmental Studies and Economics is intended to provide students with the basic tools of economic analysis and an understanding of the principles of resource production, conservation and use in both ecological and economic terms.


Introductory Requirements

For Economics:

  • ECON 1  Microeconomics
  • ECON 2  Macroeconomics
  • ECON 11A  Math Methods for Economists
  • ECON 11B  Math Methods for Economists

For Environmental Studies:

  • ENVS 23
  • ENVS 24
  • ENVS 25
  • SOCY/ANTHRO/Ethics (see single major reqs.)
  • Statistics (see Econ 113 below)

Advanced Requirements

  • Envs 100/L  Ecology & Society (before any ENVS upper div. electives)
  • Econ 100A Intermediate Microeconomics
  • Econ 113 Introduction to Econometrics
  • SIX elective courses from within THREE courses from each department:
    • Economics: See the Economics advisor for the list of electives to choose from
    • Environmental Studies: Of the three courses in environmental studies, one must be based in the natural sciences

Senior Comprehensive -choose one from the following:

  • By completing one of the ENVS senior comprehensive requirement options and the Economics Comprehensive Exam (as administered in ECON 100A and ECON 113)
  • ENVS 195A (senior thesis) with faculty sponsors from both departments
