I seek to better understand the complex drivers of change in coupled human-natural systems through mixed-method fieldwork and analysis. Currently, I study how formal and informal institutions influence the management of and access to marine resources in the Micronesian island nation of Kiribati. Ultimately, I hope to inform governance that promotes the equitable use and long-term vitality of small-scale fisheries, vital for livelihoods, culture, and food supply in much of the world.
