CoRenewal is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving biodiversity and ameliorating the impacts of natural disasters and ecological disturbances on both community and ecosystem health. We are committed to environmental justice, education and collaborative, community-led solutions for supporting ecological resilience. We emphasize the role of Fungi in restoration, specifically in restoring petroleum-contaminated, fire-affected, or heavy-metal contaminated agricultural or natural ecosystems.
Intern Responsibilities:
As an intern, you will engage in both field and research activities, including:
- Contributing to Biome Logs research project
- Assisting with soil sampling
- Site installations
- Microbial assessments
- Forestry practices
- Fungal and microbial inoculation.
- Assist with the efforts of Southern California Post-Fire Bioremediation Coalition
- Join meetings and take notes
- Perform administrative tasks
- Participate in educational events in Los Angeles if feasible
- Make Myco-wattles to be sent to Los Angeles
- Educational efforts
- Develop a Post-Fire Bioremediation Handbook
- Help produce public educational event in the Santa Cruz Mountains on wildfire and microbial resilience
Other Requirements:
Be willing to go off trail in the forest on steep slopes, use tools including loppers and hand saws.
Intern Shifts:
While the work hours are mostly flexible, with shifts likely on Monday afternoons and/or Friday mornings.
Location: Spaten Way and Sunlit Ln in Bonny Doon. Approximately 15 minutes up Empire Grade from UCSC, walking distance from a bus line. Carpools will be organized.
