Mpala Fear Ecology Interns

Agency Sponsor: Michael Kowalski, mbkowals@ucsc.edu

If interested, email agency sponsor. This is an unpaid internship.

# of Interns:

Lioness Cubs

Agency Description:

At Wilmers’ Lab we know that fear of predation is a universal and complex component of any ecosystem. Humans impart a unique fear that reaches all trophic levels. This internship is part of a series of field experiments conducted at Mpala Research Centre in Laikipia, Kenya. We used playback speakers, camera traps, high-frequency accelerometer collars, foraging trials, and habitat surveys to measure the response large African mammals to simulated human disturbance. These experiments are the first of their kind and will be an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in cutting-edge research in behavioral ecology and wildlife conservation.

Intern Responsibilities:

I am seeking interns to assist identifying African mammal species from camera trap photos, score behavior from an ethogram during foraging trials, and train a machine learning algorithm. All necessary training to succeed will be provided at the conclusion of the application process.

Other Requirements:

On-campus intern positions are time-flexible and ideal for the intern who only has partial days available between classes. Ideally, interns will have a computer they can process photos and append databases with. Commitment, communication skills, and attention to detail are highly desirable applicant qualities. Two-unit or 5-unit internships are fully appreciated, but given the training required, applicants who can commit multiple quarters and those interested in senior theses are preferred.
