Jinnah publishes on Solar Radiation Management, takes on chair role in department

Professor Sikina Jinnah published “Solar Radiation Management (SRM): A History of the Governance and Political Milestones” in Environmental Science and provides a chronological review of the governance history of SRM, from 2006 to 2024. Often characterized as an ungoverned space, the authors argue that the governance landscape for SRM is actually quite rich, though activity is primarily in the Global North, where research and governance capacity are concentrated, raising important implications for global climate justice.

Jinnah collaborated with Arts Professor Jorge Menna Barreto (Arts) to bring this article into conversation with Barreto’s photographic series, Butter Architecture, 2006-2021.  Though created independently, the series became Barreto’s response to Jinnah and Dove’s invitation to bridge artistic and scientific perspectives. The melting butter evokes the fragility of constructed worlds under heat, echoing SRM’s tensions: between preservation and collapse, action and inertia. As environments dissolve, daily life continues—reflecting our difficulty in adjusting to a rapidly changing planet.

Jinnah was also selected as the next holder of the Robert Headley Presidential Chair for Integral Ecology & Environmental Justice. She will use the associated funds to support her climate justice research group’s work, including creating a pilot undergraduate research program for climate justice.
