CASFS Farm at UC Santa Cruz

The Environmental Studies department houses several facilities and resources that students can use to engage in experiential and hands-on learning:

 

  • ENVS Internship Office: Outside of our more traditional classroom-based courses, the Environmental Studies program offers over 120 internships from a variety of local, state, national, and international organizations in education, agriculture, and politics. These internships give students the opportunity to learn in a hands-on way, explore possible future career paths, and participate in important environmental work while earning units towards their undergraduate degrees.

 

  • Center for Agroecology: The Center for Agroecology is a research, education, and public service program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The center is dedicated to increasing ecological sustainability and social justice in the food and agriculture system.

 

 

  • Global Environmental Justice Observatory: The purpose of the observatory is to support research and education in the interface of the environment, social justice and human rights. The observatory is located at UCSC and welcomes volunteers and collaborators from all over the world. (description from website) 

 

  • UCSC Greenhouses: The Jean H. Langenheim Greenhouses is an instructional facility open to the public. It is located on the roof of Thimann Labs. This facility has a botanical collection as well as a lab, library, outdoor seating areas and staff representation to facilitate its appreciation. (description from website)

 

  • UC Natural Reserves: The University of California Natural Reserve System is a network of protected natural areas throughout California. Its 39 sites include more than 756,000 acres, making it the largest university-administered reserve system in the world. Most major state ecosystems are represented, from coastal tidepools to inland deserts, and lush wetlands to Sierra Nevada forests. The reserves also serve as a gateway to more than a million acres of public lands. Founded in 1965 to provide undisturbed environments for research, education, and public service, the Natural Reserve System contributes to the understanding and wise stewardship of the earth. (description from website)

 

  • Center for Integrated Spatial Research (CISR): CISR, formerly the GIS/ISC Laboratory, is the central facility for spatially-focused research and training at the University of California, Santa Cruz. CISR is focused on integrating state-of-of-the-art spatial technology and methods (geographic information systems, global positioning systems, remote sensing, spatial modeling/statistics) with pressing interdisciplinary research and fostering cross-domain cooperation in the application of these tools. In order to advance this purpose, CISR is dedicated to promoting a diversity of research by increasing campus and community literacy in spatial methods and engaging in innovations in spatial science. (description from website)

 

  • People of Color Sustainability Collective (PoCSC): While not specifically affiliated with the department of Environmental Studies, PoCSC is a notable resource for our students and our campus. The mission of the People of Color Sustainability Collective is to make UCSC a leader not just in mainstream sustainability, but also environmental justice, in recognition of our changing demographics and pressing ecological challenges. The PoCS Collective represents a groundbreaking collaboration between the Ethnic Resource Centers, Colleges Nine and Ten, and the UCSC Sustainability Office, and we will continue to grow the coalition through outreach to departments, student organizations, and other units.
